I enjoyed this challenge.  I don’t play with black and white often so it gave me the opportunity to select a photo I thought would work well.

1- This particular photo was taken June 12 of this year while I was headed for a hair cut.  These two were engrossed in an activity on the curb at one end of the mall.  If the photo had been taken when I was their age I would say baseball cards might be part of the discussion.  As there appears to be only one scooter, it may be they are trying to divvy up time for sharing the ride.  I like catching people in poses with faces hidden.  I don’t think a photo has to have a face to be interesting and in fact because the boys backs are turned to me a totally different story is offered than if they were facing me.

2- Just enough pattern to make the image interesting but uncluttred.

Have a super week and thanks always for your comments.

  • We dreamt during many years of color photos . But it seems the black and white gives more contrast especially for the portraits .

In this case I hesit to say what one I prefer .
I wonder what is your one choice , Becca .

  • You certainly found the right angle for this photo. One feels like sneaking up and listening in on the conversation between the two boys. The story is there both in colour and in B&W

  • I too think that B&W clears away distractors so that the image comes to what is important. Nice photo, I love catching people unaware. Until next friday have a good week.

  • so interesting to catch these two fellers engrossed in something … maybe a bug? in my youth, it probably wooda been a bug or frog … or something with life … makes me with i was a cricket in one of their pockets so i could hear the conversation … b&w to me always causes us to look for closely for the subtle details that color subdues … great catch!!!

  • June 12 – my wedding anniversary. A good day for taking photo’s too! Did you run a filter over the original?

  • @fauquet - Hi Michel.  I did some hunting through my photos for particulars, with people, I recalled having taken.  I am not sure which I prefer for this image, the color or black and white.  Usually I’ll opt for color but I’m not unhappy with the black and white image.  I think if I would make the contrast in the black and white a little stronger I might like it more.  It’s nearly a toss up.  I think I would have to see them both larger and mounted to decide.  I find standing back to look and looking more than once over a period of time gives me a better decision for like and don’t like.  I’m betting you have a new entry up.  I’ll be checking your pages.  :)

  • @Zeal4living - I enjoyed reading your comment on the boys per sneaking up to listen to conversation.  I think the photo would have told a totally different story if they had been facing the camera.  It’s fun guessing what was being discussed between the two of them and it’s a photo I’m glad I had my camera on and ready to go.  It may well be one of my favorites.  Thanks always for your input.

  • @bumblefish - Yes, there is less distraction in black and white, an emptiness because of less color I guess.  I think there are photos that can look really fine in bl and wh but I’m a color person so I don’t play in black and white often.  Maybe I should.  I know of people who think it is the only way to go.  Thanks always for your comments.  I think input helps a lot with anything you are not expert at.  Photography has some wonderfully simple and basic rules I don’t always follow.  I need to study if I’m ever to turn out something I feel like really crowing about.

  • @windupherskirt - yes, I carried a few snakes and frogs and crawdeads about as a kid.  Fact is I was pretty much a tomboy.  I wish we could have had photography a lot cheaper than it was at the time.  I didn’t know how interested I was until I could afford to play with it.  You are correct about having to study the image in black and white.  I would miss things if I didn’t and I really try to see what is going on in a photo people take the time to share.  The black and white makes you take some time.

  • @rojobe - You asked about filters on my photo.  I did not use any of my camera filters but I did enhance color with my Paint Shop Pro and sharpen some.  I played with the contrast in the black and white attempting to clarify it for my own satisfaction.  My eyes are not great anymore and what I see may not be what others see.  Not a good thing sometimes but I hope it improves the photo instead of degrading it.  Thanks for taking time to look over my entry.

  • @PhotoGraphics - lmao … i was a tomboy too … but no frogs and snakes … more like horse sweat on the inseam of my jeans and horse smell all over me … and dirt, stickers, and grass … I didn’t get into photography until much later … but have a cornucopia of saved mental images … just now I forgot where I put them sometimes … LOL

  • I like the B&W. There is something melancholic about it.

  • They are discussing their nexr escapade, boys always do! Been there, done that and I have got the “T” shirt! You can count on it. As for preference I donno! Whatever they are discussing. You can count on it being a secret and probably mischievous, in a light hearted way. ~ Tim

  • Many of the entries in this challenge give a time travelling feel and I feel that here, nice shot!

  • Interesting with the watercolor effect.

  • Lovely shot Becca, nice to see you again as its rare at the moment for me to get to xanga, i have to borrow comp time from my kids for a while, hope you are both well.

    Tim.

  • Hi Becca!
I also like very much black and white photos, despite I never do it as I like the other color way too much… Now seriously, black and white let us see us more, sometimes, than color as add a special feeling to compositions such as the feeling that I have from yours – the act of playing and sharing in their own world is stronger and become the theme of the photo.
About photo challenges, isn’t this week your challenge “Seeing double”?
Being late (as usual) I tried to post about several themes in one sole post. “Seeing double” is my last picture as I count the object and it’s shadow… I hope you like it and enjoy the music as well – it’s “Fado”, a traditional urban Portuguese music. It seems sad, but I prefer to think it as intense and deep…
The male singer is very sensual
    I hope you like it!
Have a great end of the week!
