I think if it weren’t for shadows and play of light we may not be able to take photos at all.  I am constantly playing with settings to try for the best photo if I have time and when I am just playing I am constantly changing settings to see what the camera can turn out with the existing light and the changes of settings.  I enjoy the playing and do better for learning than with a manual.

Some photos with a bit of shadow
but more with the light playing with subject matter
and the affects we see due to atmosphere or time of day.

1- Rainy days are great for light from headlights or street lights playing with the atmosphere.
2- The sun sits to the left of the school bus throwing its shadow to the right but there is an unexpected amount of light on the windows with nice reflection.

3- in the dark and rain, the exhaust catches the colors of the tail lights giving the whole car a red glow of light.
4- The contrails from jets catch the light and make lots of pattern along with the busy wispy clouds.

5- Shadows from the evergreens are thrown across the street and they camouflage the boy walking nearly under the tree.
6- Steam rises and the light catches it.  Steam and clouds and exhaust are always interesting to me to photograph.

7- More rain and nearly dark out but there is still a bit of shadow riding along under the truck.
8- Late at night going into the Bay Bridge tunnel in Virginia near Norfolk.

    9- ShadowsOrPlayOfLight-9_RSBlain.JPG 10- ShadowsOrPlayOfLight-10_RSBlain.JPG

9- the same bridge but going out of it into the artificial night lighting.
10- Daytime and entering the same tunnel but from the opposite direction.  The light at all hours of the day changes its look and changing the settings on the camera can change it even more.

11- going out the other end and the explosion of white light is nearly blinding.  Light really plays with photos and can make or break it.  It’s always interesting and fun to do a series of the same scene, changing the time of day.

I took this photo to get the tree.  I’m partial to Birch and Sycamore trees because of the wonderful light and dark bark of both of them.  They give Winter a really special look.  This tree has a wonderful shadow too so it works for this challenge.

  • Firstly- love your background so very spring fresh.
Your through the windshield photos are always a pleasure. Your tunnel photos are great. I learned of a photo trick this weekend – if you have a sunroof is a must for going through a tunnel. UP you go through the sunroof when you are entering the tunnel and zoom the lens only one way while the aperature remains open…. Going to try it without losing my head. Poor husband having to take me through tunnels till I get it right. How true that a photo really stands apart because of light and shadow. You have a great week too – what is up with people posting to weekly photo challenge but not dropping by to others that have posted, guess that was the reason I joined the site, it is a great way to learn from others’ photos….

  • @bumblefish - Thanking you for more than one compliment as any are always nice to read.  Per people stopping by, I have no answer as I have been a member of more than one group on more than one site and it’s always the same.  As far as weekly photo, I have the feeling many never go back to check on who has added an entry for the current challenge.  Maybe it’s forgetfulnell or too tired or too busy or ???  I never put an entry in without going to every site entry listed before my own and I always check back for later entries, even checking older weeks to discover who may have entered late.  Everyone gets a comment from me.  Fair is fair but not in the real world is what I’ve discovered.  AS I only play with the challenge and do very little visiting otherwise I’m not well known in xanga circles.  This is a detriment per gaining xanga friendships but I decided sometime back I would not give my whole life over to computing but photos are a fun way to share and a way to keep your hand in on some aspects of writing and playing with software in sites used for editing and display.

About the tunnel, let me see if I have this straight and will say first, I don’t have a sunroof but standing with head and camera out of the sunroof, camera pointed one direction with zoom adjusted but never changed, you would take a series of shots from that single angle.  Sounds good to me.  I’ve done similar riding with car window closed or open with angle unchanging (as much as riding bumping along will allow no change) and taking shot after shot as we move.  I have found if the camera angle is looking ahead but somewhat to the side I’ve picked up some good images.  I do know if you are in a tunnel or just on the road, assuming there is some distance from the car to the wall or scene, that you will still not be pointed directly at the wall or trees or brush nearby to avoid smear or fuzzies because of the movement.  Though, if the light is good enough and your speed very fast you should be able to stop the movement and get some photos.  It would be fun to catch some walkers that way if there is a barred path and people allowed to walk through which short tunnels would have, I think.  It would look like you are standing inside, on the danger zone of the tunnel for the fun of taking photos.  Could be real conversation pieces.  Have fun.  I know I would if I could do what you are planning.

  • I like the green tunnel best. The others are nice too.

  • “Shadows or Play of Light” was the theme. I can not fault a single photo of yours as they all depict the theme so well with such a wide variance of scenes. The mind boggles at the care you must have taken in choosing your photos and the skill at using your camera to capture such graphic illustrations. Not to mention any added artwork. 10/10 for intuition and art Becca. ~ Tim

  • @crO_Oner - Thanks for your visit and the comment.  I have a lot of inside the tunnel photos, all just a wee bit different.  I like them all but the green one I posted is one of the better ones.  I keep trying for better yet but it may take an even better camera to get it.  :(

  • @tim_beddard - Hi Tim.  Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment.  I know you are caught up in repairs etc.  Like me, the Internet takes time we don’t have a lot of lately.  :)

  • Your gift never ceases to give me pleasure

  • @Nanny - Heidi Ho Nanny, whenever I see your name here I feel somewhat guilty for not being around much.  The Internet just isn’t calling to me like it did in the past but I’m still around.  Hoping this finds you doing okay and the cat as full of mischief as ever.  (ours manages a lot of that)  I’ll hop over tomorrow to check your latest entries.  I know I’ve missed a lot of them.  Hugs and thanks always for your input, it’s always a feel gooder. Becca
