Weekly Photo Challenge, “Wildlife in My Part of the World”
Follow the Link to Visit and PLAY the
Weekly Photo ChallengeWildlife in the United States including Ohio are varied and some species is unique to regions such as the Antelope in the North Western states. In Ohio, you can’t see Antelope but you can find mammals from Ground Squirrels to Deer, which are Antelope size, but so much natural habitat has been encroached upon by man a lot of wildlife has been forced to adapt or migrate from the area. I have seen a lot of wildlife one time only and some I see nearly every day. There are animals native to Ohio I have never seen except in the zoo. I have seen outside of zoos, Mice, Chipmunks, Black and Grey tree Squirrels, Fox, Coyotes, Groundhogs, Deer, birds from Hummingbirds to Buzzards (Eagles are in the area but I haven’t seen one outside of the zoo), Bears but not in Ohio, and lots of fish in the lakes plus frogs, snakes, salamanders, crayfish and boatloads of insects, some of which I could well do without.
I have a lot of photos but decided to limit myself two 3 images of Mammals figuring to save birds, bugs, and reptiles for later challenges.
My Photos
1- This is one of many squirrels living in the trees surrounding my house. If I didn’t have the cat which adopted us, I would get more friendly with the squirrels feeding them to get better close ups. This photo was taken at the end of our drive and across the street.
2- This is a night photo taken with flash about 15 or so feet from my door. I have photographed some of it’s buddies only feet from my door some pushy enough to stick their nose in the crack of the door I have open to use my camera. If they think food is around they would walk right in. I don’t fancy a raccoon loose in my house. They are entertaining but they can be nasty tempered.
3- I’m not fast enough to catch the deer. John is the one who usually sees them and comes in for the camera. This deer is maybe 50 feet from our front door and I am pretty sure they come on to my porch. I frightened one in the dark late at night and it couldn’t have been more than 10 feet from me. They managed to eat my morning glories from how far their head bows down to how far they can reach up leaving leaves and flowers above and below and the stripped areas to grow out again. We have put a salt block out in hopes of tempting them close enough regularly so we can get photos. There are a lot of deer around evidenced by road kills. The animals don’t stand much of a survival chance with the lifestyles we humans think we should be living without animal interference.
Thanks always for your comments and keep on taking those photos.

Very professionally laid out Becky. I like they way you went to the trouble of explaining a bit about the wild liofe in the USA and Ohio before you put your very excellent photos up. Especially of interest to me is the Racoon as we don’t get them here in the UK, and I have heard so much about them. I was interested to learn that they can be nasty customers. Squirrels and Deer we do get in the UK.
Wow, your photos are all so well composed. The squirrel seems to be the old time favourite in this challenge. Your squirrel pic is my favourite of al the photo’s I have see so far. I just love how you managed to catch the squirrel’s alertness. I would not have minded to have had deer walking past my house. I always enjoy your photo’s.
perfect shots!!! i wuv duh racoon … such bandits they are …
how did you get them to pose for you?
Nice shots. I have a squirrel from the California coast. I’ll post it for the challenge so we can compare regional colors and shared characteristics.
So lucky for you to have them right at your door step.
Oh we have too many squirrels here in Georgia…getting in all the bird feeders. One got in the house through the chimney while we were on vacation – What a mess when we returned. He had eaten all the wood off the inside of the wood frame windows trying to get out.
Raccoons are unfortunately usually seen as roadkill around here. We don’t like them too close to the house and pets for fear of rabies. The raccoon in the house last Fall made a home in our heating system. He would come into our work room/greenhouse at night. When he ate all the orchid blooms, in one night, it was the last straw. What’s worse than a raccoon eating the orchid blooms? A dead raccoon trapped somewhere in the rafters between floors.
I bet the squirrel and raccoon were really ‘caught’ in the act. Nice shots I especially enjoy that raccoon.
Good shots!
I have already seen deer and squirrel but never seen a raccoon . What a wonderful animal !
I have well received your e.mail about the comparison between the two parties . How humorously those things are said !!
Thank you , Becca
